Ever wondered what dentists your friends would recommend? What about music or movies? That’s the thought Facebook had when developing Graph Search. The hope and idea of the final product will be that users can: Find photos you’ve liked, Find all the photos of two particular people or maybe find that picture from prom in 1999.

Graph Search will be a search engine that grabs information off of Facebook instead of the web. Instead of using keywords to find results (like when searching the web), Graph Search will use full phrases like “What kind of music do my friends in New York like”. The true difference with Graph Search is that privacy will be it’s first priority. Nothing of yours can be searched or viewed by someone else unless you’ve allowed it in your settings.

Facebook launched a Beta of Graph Search today and announced that it is currently available in English only.

The first version of Graph Search focuses on four main areas — people, photos, places, and interests.

People: “friends who live in my city,” “people from my hometown who like hiking,” “friends of friends who have been to Yosemite National Park,” “software engineers who live in San Francisco and like skiing,” “people who like things I like,” “people who like tennis and live nearby”

Photos: “photos I like,” “photos of my family,” “photos of my friends before 1999,” “photos of my friends taken in New York,” “photos of the Eiffel Tower”

Places: “restaurants in San Francisco,” “cities visited by my family,” “Indian restaurants liked by my friends from India,” “tourist attractions in Italy visited by my friends,” “restaurants in New York liked by chefs,” “countries my friends have visited”

Interests: “music my friends like,” “movies liked by people who like movies I like,” “languages my friends speak,” “strategy games played by friends of my friends,” “movies liked by people who are film directors,” “books read by CEOs”

Facebook sees it as a project that they will be working on for years to come while also adding new search options along the way.
